I was in the military out of college, got to serve in Iraq and be a platoon leader in combat. One of the best experiences of my life, truly made me who I am. But I wanted to pursue a civilian career so I got out and didn’t look back. The intervening years have been good to me, and I now preside over a thriving shitlaw and real estate business. Improbably, I find myself missing the military.
I may have found a way change that. I would join what is called a state defense force in a neighboring state. SDF's were authorized by Congress in the WWII era, and they are basically like the National Guard, but they can't be federalized or sent overseas. I would go to this other state one weekend a month and do legal work for the organization. I would salute, wear a uniform, the whole nine yards.
Being a JAG officer might add a little prestige to my profile, would be a good way to make connections in this other state where I also operate, etc. But mainly I would do it for the pride of serving.
Wife is predictably angry and opposed to the idea. Thinks it will mean less time with our family. But as far as anything military goes, it seems extremely chill. Am I crazy to do this bros? Or is it a good opportunity?

holy shit, my state has one of these and gemini says attorneys are 'sought after' and enter in as o-3. no contract, no commitment...seems like a low key way to get that 'thank you for your service' and military discounts (20% off at bonobos!)
only catch it's unpaid, but could be fun none the less
