I was really put off by their look and their fans & I always just assumed you had to be a low testosterone liberal to enjoy them. All my friends were pretty much normie Chad jock dudes & none of them listened to this music

I thought maybe that was unfair so I'm listening to them on spotify now and it's really dull & gay

A lot of indie music in this era was soy cuckcore & it ushered in an era of rap dominance

soy cuckcore was the whole hipster zeitgeist. it completely vanished overnight, just like grunge and cock rock before it.

it was educated middle class soyboys and feminists who moved to urban areas around 2000, particularly brooklyn. they leaned on irony (trucker hats, tattoos, facial hair) to cover their lack of masculinity and repurposed new wave androgyny (no make up, tattoos, casual clothing) to cover for their lack of femininity. they weren't angry enough for grunge and weren't scummy enough for nu-metal. they just wanted to do drugs and dance (LCD soundsystem et al). as early internet adopters, they controlled the online-cultural-industrial-complex until the iphone came out and gave the power back to normies and their pop slop fuck music.

a lot of those groups seemed to be taking pavement-style slacker/'indie' rock and merging it with sincere bruce springsteen-style anthemic overtones. it does sound really dated these days. it doesn't correspond to any sort of relevant cultural mood or attitude anymore.

i'd agree pavement is the source material, with their ironic detachment that only trust funders can afford. there weren't any angry scumbagtypes in the brooklyn scene, nor were there many activist political or philosophical poet types. it was just "who cares let's party" with a sprinkling of "MY feelings."

I don't really care what normie Chad jocks think. I wouldn't have been friends with them even if I listened to Nickelback and The Calling and Remember the Name by Fort Minor. The Dubya era was really drab in terms of music, it's like the mainstream media decided that no fun was allowed after 9/11. I thank the indie labels for trying to be creative and different.

IDC what you think, their first 3 albums were great.

I regret not seeing them in 2004. They played a bar down the street shortly after Pitchfork gave Funeral a very high score. It would have been my best opportunity to see a big band in a small room.

I lived in Williamsburg Brooklyn circa 2006-2012. Right near the Bedford L stop. Craigslist roommates. You kind of had to be there to get it. I did drugs and sometimes hooked up with mousy 5.5-6s. You had to be there to get it. Arcade Fire, LCD Sound System, the Antlers, Fleet Foxes, Phoenix, Passion Pit, Modest Mouse, Yeah Yeah Yeah’s, MGMT, Interpol, all of it. Late nights. Missing work hungover. It was a scene.

The world is worse off without the hipsters. I want to go back.

OP sounds like the kind of bro who liked to hang out at Dorian’s and Rathbones.

Agreed 100%.

I went on some OK Cupid date with some chick who had downloaded their album from some random website and thought their band name was something completely different like it was someone who just changed the name to some other band name and we spent the entire date arguing about this while I tried to prove to her that it was actually a band called Metric. She was in Marketing and we had sex.

I really enjoyed this book: https://www.amazon.com/Meet-Me-Bathroom-Rebirth-2001-2011/dp/0062233092

But even at the time it felt like it was a hollow shell compared to the 60s/70s.

Were you ever photographed on Blue States Lose? That was one of my highlights of 2005.

The singer from CSS did heavy flirting with me at a concert (they were opening for Ladytron and she got off the stage and walked through the audience). It was awkward.

I admit I was listening to indie then but wtf were my options really? Scumbags completely jumped the shark and were doing awful shit like "Shinedown" iirc. it wasn't like the heyday of Korn when they were cultivating a pretty cool and edgy gothic trailer park aesthetic. it was just really fucking lame, like a Monster Energy Drink ad or something.

In 15 years you’ll be grudgingly owning up to having *played* indie titles just like you are today with indie music imho. After all, what was there? AAA is to Shinedown…. The State of Music.

Also idk what you’re taking about when Vertical Horizon, Finger 11, and Tool were cranking out bangers, all with Bald frontmen.

Tool were always apart from the nu-metal dreck and sort of the artistic elder statesmen of metal at the time...I think Maynard was literally ten years older than most other frontmen at the time.

the biggest bullshit "band" of this era was animal collective. total garbage "music" that critics completely fawned over like they had reinvented the art form.

i didn't like animal collective either but they were innovative and generally known for pushing the envelope in the genres that they worked with

they were definitely talented. so were arcade fire, for that matter. you don't have to personally like it to appreciate the genius at work

AC was chill and unique. They could have had more big singles. They eschewed making commercial rock hits. This endeared them to Pitchfork types. They only had one really big radio single I can think of.

this thread is full of the particular type of moral disease that causes one to think that artists make art for them, as another demand-driven consumptive good, instead of for themselves and for the good of their own creative genius

this particular sort of thinking is also why we have aesthetically repulsive AI slop everywhere now btw

i'd have to listen to it again but as i recall their stuff was sonically rich with excellent layering. lot of overlap with the "kid a is the best radiohead album" crowd

the lyricist was also pretty talented, but i have no examples to draw on as i didn't love it either
