It’s true, shit like iPads and MacBooks were much better relative to the competition back then. Also lasted a lot longer.

Now they’re the same buggy malfunctioning crap and there’s hardly anything you can do with them (or any “devices”) now you couldn’t do then.

cr, cr. used to buy a new computer/laptop every 5 years now it's normal to replace in less than 2 years

websites and apps that used to be functional are now paywalled bloatware with unblockable/unskippable ads everywhere and requiring account registration with your IRL phone #

computer and film graphics also look like absolute shit, watch the latest netflix sysco slop or vidya and it looks like something from 2005

I dunno what kind of shit you people are buying but the general trend has been toward more longevity, not less.

Nowadays it's common for people to go 4-5 years (or even more) on a smartphone. Literally nobody was doing that in 2011.

Similar story on PCs. You're basically golden if you have an SSD and a decent amount of RAM. I guess that rubric doesn't hold if you're a gamer. But otherwise you're gonna get like 10 years on a computer.

Phone longevity hasn't really changed (3-4 yrs) but agreed the technological progress of phones is well past its peak rate.

I'm currently poasting on a machine produced in 2011 (a Thinkpad X220), and I know lots of other people that regularly use stuff that's even older.

It would have been unthinkable to use a 2000 model computer in 2011.

Uh wtf is this post? If you're arguing in terms of raw transistor count... lmao. Duh. No shit.

But if you're discussing what actually matters - relative improvements in computing power over time, i.e. Moore's law - it's the complete opposite. Moore's law has slowed down in the last decade, not accelerated.

Moores law slowed down by about a half year starting in 2012 sure. Transistor count still went from something like 50 million to 1 billion from 2002 to 2010 and then 1 billion to 50 billion from 2010 to 2020. Also, given that moores law is a rate, and the rate has been exponential, it doesn't have to accelerate for there to be a bigger increase in overall power. In terms of raw computing power, the benchmarks increased a shitton. How is this not a relative increase in computing power? The problem seems to be just that computers were so weak in 2000 that the jump from 2000 to 2010 made a huge difference to the average user along with improvements like introduction of smart phones and 4G.

cpu power in general has advanced far more from 2011-2022 then it did from 2001 to 2011. Sure, we saw more substantive advances in useable tech from 2001-2011 and everything after was streamling. But the ultimate outcome of the increases in power will lead to BIG CHANGES at some point.

So you feel this way because 4G/true wireless broadband launched around 2011/2012 which was a monumental societal shift affecting every aspect of human life. But since then there have been all sorts of significant (if incremental) gains across every level of technology. Hell even cancer meds have made big strides in the last few years. People who in 2010 would be given 1 year or so to live are living 4-5 years with a decent quality of life for many disease states. It’s possible that at least some forms of previously death sentences cancer doseasss will be treatable an liveable in the way that HIV is with tumor suppressing drugs in our lifetime.

Believe it for not those years mean a lot for the patients and their families. Note most people that get cancer are older anyways. Difference between dying at 69 and 74.

And yes, I think that extending life is something we should in fact incentivize. As opposed to selling ads on Instagram or delivering you slop food.

technology as we know it follows a well-worn path: when it is new its promises are greater freedom for the masses; when the technology gets perfected/advanced the freedom illusion disappears and the hard reality sets in: the technological advancement was purely for increased governmental control and DECREASED freedoms, and it's here to stay. you can see this with facebook/twitter/instagram, you can see this with the internet in general, you can see this with crypto and upcoming CBDCs which will be used to totally rape your ass. technology is poison.

Yeah the epidemic of 19 year olds selling tracts of raw law in rural Idaho that have been in the family since the late 1800s for Boolberry tokens is truly reaching epidemic proportions, I hear the WSJ is working on a 3-part investigative deep dive into this slated for publication next month.

AI can now drive cars and just recently solved the protein folding problem. Think there will be some breakthroughs in math and science from ai in the next few years. With folding and crispr they now have the tools to design and produce proteins

Solving the protein structure problem is huge. AI is close to being able to solve so many problems in biology and medicine. Genetics is already developing so fast right now using computational methods that people in the field can barely keep up with it. Think of what will happen when better and better AI ends up being applied to brain patterns and shit like that. Also cancer detecting algorithms that outperform experts are quickly reaching maturity, and have already been presented for certain forms of cancer.

not sure how close it is, but there are certainly a lot of potential applications in biology and medicine. deep learning can be used to simulate a lot of cellular machinery besides protein folding, which makes in silicon drug design much more feasible. DeepMind's stated goal is the simulation of an entire cell, but i'm not sure they need to stop there. why not an entire organism, or at least organs?

i think the slow pace of medical research could change in a short period of time if these tools get good enough. no need to endlessly debate stuff like the root cause of alzheimer's if they can just simulate the actual disease with whatever precision they want

Maybe with medicine and automobiles (although with those you can go back maybe up to 150 years). With computing technology, the line should probably be drawn sometime in the 50s with the invention of the integrated circuit. 100 years is still an insanely short time in human history so its not like we can accurately predict what the next 100 years will bring.

AMD.

even if they were equal now, i would support buying AMD after intel jewed everyone around for years since they had no competitor

High end PC desktop? Generally AMD. Intel has cheaper competitors that might be good enough depending on your application.

Quantum leaps forward in computing and data speed, except solely dedicated to loading you up with ads and spyware. Things don’t feel faster today than 10 years ago, but they do seem shittier.

Part of it is perception though. You probably don't recall an Xbox 360 being any worse than an Xbox Series X (or PS3 vs PS5 if you're a PS person) but load up a 360 game vs a Series X game today and the difference is obvious. I remember a far lower resolution IPS display being impressive while today that looks like crap compared to my 4k OLED.

There has been a bifurcation between the world of BIT and the world of IT. Computing is huge, but I'm not sure it's as consequential as electricity and radio and refrigeration and the airplane. The rate of progress around 1900 was certainly greater than the rate around 2000. And in the mid 20th century we got all kinds of new stuff that made people's lives easier -- laundry machines and dish washing machines and air conditioning and so on. Not to mention nuclear power and space rockets.

As far as physical, non-digital technological development, we seem to be plateauing. Or else it is classified.

You're probably thinking from a consumer electronics perspective. Sort of like how an iPhone is an iPhone (though, current one is many times faster), one version of the Xbox was replaced with another (faster one). Wireless internet (and most home internets) are all faster. There have been significant improvements in and additional applications of AI. Obviously EVs are new and much improved. Self-driving is new and much improved (my 2013 Jeep has adaptive cruise but many cars will now steer for you and change lanes, they'll park your car for you and so on). Since 2011 everything has moved to the cloud so everyone can access anything from anywhere.

Give me an example of something that regressed since 2011.

I for one welcome the slowdown of the pace of technological change. It was getting too tedious having to basically learn a new operating system every 18 months

What were these operating systems you were learning every 18 months? Windows today ultimately isn't all that different than it was in 2011.

I haven't played with Linux in a long time, but has it changed that much?

Does he think those are examples of "different operating systems"?
