couple of weeks ago I was in your neck of the woods and I sprained my ankle. went to a pharmacy and asked for some pain relievers. woman there literally told me, in that awful back of throat accent, in very un-S broken english, no, waved her hand at me to go away, and added "mei you". I asked for a product in her store and she essentially told me to go fuck myself. I asked "are you from China", knowing that she was, and she said yes. utterly different from the normal, pleasant, human customer experience one has there with locals. but completely typical of china.

My hotel in Taipei was full of mainlanders who talked and slammed their doors all night. It was brutal. But most brutal was what I saw in one of Taipei's ritziest shopping malls, where a mainland tourist took the dirty diaper off her baby, dropped it on the floor, and walked away, just leaving it there.

I really enjoy being in Taiwan as much as I hate being in China; one time I was there I was moved to post a thread about what a tragedy it was that the communists conquered China because otherwise all of China might be as good a place as Taiwan (and Japan) is

good social contract, people are basically geared towards honesty and politeness (and family and good food), I will work with a Taiwanese on the shake of a hand whereas you cannot even trust a formal contract with a mainlander
