Galloway: I got through U.C.L.A., showing up with a 1984 Honda Accord and $60, and $4,500 in student loans. My tuition was $1,200 a year.

And then I graduated. I rewarded the generosity of California taxpayers and the Regents of U.C. with a 2.27 GPA — which for your listeners, Ross, is not very good.

Douthat: It’s above a 2.0.

Galloway: It’s above a 2.0. Yeah.

Douthat: It’s better than a 2.0.

Galloway: It’s enough to graduate. They did give me the same diploma everyone else got. And this is the crazy part: Berkeley, arguably the finest public institution in America, let me in to graduate school.

he makes an interesting point that our top tier schools act like luxury products by restricting access when they have huge endowments and could easily open themselves up to more students and level the playing field some. they're perpetuating the competitive insanity.

HYPS acceptance rates are four or five percent now, it's beyond insane.

otoh, i wonder what the maximum tuition is that these schools could charge and still enroll a strong group of students at their current size. probably like a million a year. they're leaving a fortune on the table both ways.

i've said for a long time that ideally the government would just shut down all of these institutions. they do much much more harm than good to our society

obviously this will never happen but thinking about it as a thought experiment helps elucidate just how harmful and hostile these institutions are to america and americans

He’s the C student who employs A and B students, as the trope goes.
