1. San Diego. Still expensive, particularly by the water, but not by California standards. Insular for California but ljl at the notion of that if you grew up in Cincinnati or somehwere like that where no one ever moves to. Big military presence and some pleasant scum/proleness so it’s not all tech and finance like the Bay Area.
2. UMC suburbs of Cleveland and Pittsburgh. (There may be some other cities to make this list.) It’s as close to the 80s/90s that you’ll find and you don’t have to pay $3m for a house just to not send your kid to violent schools that are not all that different from juvie in the 1980s. Private schools, country clubs, cottages, boat dock, etc. are all reasonably priced compared to the coasts where private schools are $60K now.
3. Chicago. NYC experience for Midwesterners for 40-60% of the price. Condos there are nearly free if you’ve lived on the coasts. *All* the smart kids from your Grand Rapids, etc. high school move there for at least a few years. You can have a college life until your 30s and people start having kids and/or moving home
