OP here. Idk I'm close to changing my mind about this. For one, there will always be piracy. Digital sales and game key cards are at least somewhat more challenging for pirates to crack. At the end of the day, Switch 2 will be cracked, and this is our way to "preserve" games. As long as the hardware can be jailbroken/hacked by Engineers, games will be preserved, So at the end of the day what are you really talking about? Emulation is technically legal btw if you own the game & license. All purchases of software entitle you to use said software indefinitely (SAAS aside). At the end of the day it's legal to emulate Ocarina of Time if you own the Cartridge. It's legal to emulate TOTK if you bought a digital "copy." In the U.S. anyway. YMMV. So even if Nintendo goes bankrupt and the servers go down, you can still play all of your games on your hacked original hardware and pass them down to your great grandchildren in a trust.
The GKCs:
let Nintendo keep pirates somewhat at bay. Game cartridges are easier to hack imho fwiw.
Lend themselves to better 3rd party support so they don't repeat the mistakes of the N64 era, where all of us — the same people — gave them a hard time for using cartridges which were much more expensive than CDs and hence discouraged 3rd parties from bringing games to N64.
Have more space. Storage is expensive. Some games are larger than 64 gb, even when compressed.
I am not an expert on this but seemingly every game needs to be "installed." Idk maybe I am misremembering. But once a game is installed, again, load times are much faster. So one of the "advantages" of cartridges (not need an install) seems hypothetical. I may be wrong here.
Allow for a used market to exist. If cheap used GKCs exist, it at least keeps the publisher from screwing us when the game has been out for a while.
On the other hand, I'm torn. I'm fed up with the absolute state of gaming and Nintendo's anti-consumer practices. I've asked the mods to keep this thread open because I am interested in opposing views. I feel that through rigorous and intellectually honest debate, we can arrive at the truth imho.
