i am watching s2 and keep thinking about one scene.

joel has spent the entire s1 keeping ellie alive by throwing his own life in the way of danger. he was fairly successful smuggler and could have easily just ditched ellie at any time, but he took a paternal role to save her. obv culminating in the end of s1 when goes on a killing spree that may have cost humanity everything, just to save the child ellie

flash forward, she is a teen lezbo now and wants a seat at the table. she wants to do "man things", wants to be recognized as equal to joel and men. joel finally relents and allows her to go on patrol. they enounter someone just bitten, and joel knows the rules - he must be killed. the man pleads and ellie sympathizes - the rules can be broken when the circumstances are really sad. joel lies to her, gets the man alone and kills him. Ellie is VERY sad and angry.

they get back to town, and Joel gives noble lies to the new widow. Your husband was brave, he took his own life, etc.

Ellie flips out and contradicts him, telling the truth, infuriating the widow and breaking her heart and rupturing the community.

a PERFECT telling of democracy, feminism, gay "rights", etc.

the entire reason Joel should NOT have permitted a teenage girl to go on patrol had little to do with her lack of physical strength, but on her complete inability to understand a man's job, a father's job, is often to do mean things to ensure the safety of everyone, and then lie about it afterwards to preserve community and stability.
