Most times, I just imagine slowly killing Frank from two houses down. He’s the President of the HOA. Easy to hate, so I mostly fascinate over which method of killing him would bring me the most satisfaction. Also Silas, my 5th grade bully that moved away.

I don’t think about killing when I’m high.

How high of a dose does it usually take to make the strongest urges subside? Do you have breakthrough urges between smoke sessions/edibles?

most xoers don't do much of any value with their brains in the first place so an objection to lobotomies is not especially well founded

I'm really lazy by default so the amount of weed I do doesn't worsen it, interferes with my sleep kinda though. I'm way more of a vibes machine on it so it's worth it.

it relates to why LLMs aren't conscious: they're state machines, not vibes machines.

180. Idk if you saw my reply to your suggestion but polling XO on AI consciousness is a great idea; I'll make that one soon. I'm inclined to say that even if we can seemingly operate on vibes alone, we're state machines too. But I'm open to convincing.

I absolutely agree. there's a specific part of the brain that actually works a lot like an LLM: the cerebellum. it's very small, very fast, and very "verbose" in storing raw statistical patterns (which is why it has 3x as many neurons as the rest of the brain put together even though each individual cell does much less). its purpose is to quickly come up with some kind of expedient action you can execute to put the world in a probably-useful state while your slower processes collect themselves to truly apprehend things.

I suspect that it does indeed register the world in such a way that discrete state is more relevant i.e. as something like a giant syllogism, something either deterministic or pseudorandom. however unlike a computer, not every process in the universe HAS a well-defined state at all: some systems can only be analyzed in terms of modes, because the microscopic state is never usefully knowable. that's what makes life different from conway's game of life (which is just a turing machine that doesn't halt).

I like the cerebellum analogy. What makes the "slower processes" something above what sufficiently complex AI could accomplish?

A computer's state and an LLM's state may be well-defined and observable, but an LLM's internals are totally indecipherable to humans. AFAIK none of the engineers knows why they do the things they do. So it's far from straightforward even though it's just data. Some might call it emergent behavior.

the thing about the part of us that's an LLM is that it's a MEDIUM and not a mind: it's a protocol not just for dealing with the outside world, but for helping all our innumerable inner homunculi make sense of each other so they can communicate with awareness of established precedent. the cerebellum just tells you "what's normatively favored here" and outputs that. so if that's your entire system, what you essentially have is the ideal expression of a bureaucracy: procedure without personnel. a human generating text is aware of norms and then is able to strategically violate them—to communicate things that aren't pure boilerplate or encyclopedia knowledge. that's a function of being able to mirror the experience of your hypothetical reader on seeing the expectation-breaking you intend to create.

I think that consciousness-aware AI paradigms that still use 1s and 0s could APPROXIMATE this kind of thing effectively and do things current AI can't, but as long as it's running on sequential logic chips it probably isn't literally conscious. the thing is we don't know how to train anything that isn't deep learning, which is why people keep insisting that LLM scaling will solve everything.

You’re not a sociopath/psychopath; you just have normal violent fantasies like everyone else. If you were a real sociopath, you’d recognize what weed does to you and never get high again
