If you visit all 154 National Forests (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_national_forests_of_the_United_States ) in the US by December 31 of this year, you will be given $3M tax free. Starting tomorrow night, you must be in a National Forest each night for the entire period between midnight at 5 am local time, until you complete your mission, or you fail the hypo and don't get the money.

Do you go for it? What do you think your odds of success are?

can you redo the link to the wiki article, it picked up the closing bracket which messes up the link (getting "no article found")

Thank. I updated the op, so now the link works, but now it looks sloppy on account of the space after the end of the link. Could you ping Rob about fixing this on the backend? He's visiting his family in Taiwan this week, so he should be awake and ready to take a look shortly.

Any restrictions on driving? Can I spend the night in the National Forest inside my vehicle?

No restrictions on driving or camping in your vehicle or pretty much wherever you want.

But, you are not afforded any special rights and privileges by virtue of your participation in the hypo. If it's illegal to camp somewhere or to camp in your car somewhere, you can go for it and deal with any consequences that entails.

honestly I think this can be done with just a vehicle in the lower 48

the one in puerto rico you would just have to find a national park near a major hub airport (there look to be some near Atlanta) and scooch on down to San Juan and rent a car and spend the night in the forest there and the same in reverse on the way back

same with the forests in Alaska near Anchorage and Juneau

the only one that worries me is the forest Yakutat in Alaska, I don't think there are any good roads from Anchorage to that, Google Maps has a 37 hour driving time for that trip, you would probably have to get a helicopter to take you there from Anchorage

actually no there is one on the big island in Hawaii too, I worry about being able to get to that from a night in any forest on the mainland

There is at least one national forest in all but ten states: Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, North Dakota, and Rhode Island (although Kansas and North Dakota have national grasslands).

Are you in?

Are you in? Would it be "worth it" to you if you got 135 national forests in then failed to complete the hypo and didn't get the money?

March: all forests in FL -> AL -> MI -> LA -> East TX

April-May (following spring green up): TN -> GA -> Carolinas -> VA -> WV -> PA

June: OH -> IN -> IL -> MI -> WI -> MN (use ferries instead of driving, it's faster)

first half of July: fly to PR and then to AK. You need special permit to camp at the PR location. Apply immediately for it. fly to San Juan. after camping, San Juan to Anchorage and puddle jumpers to get to the two Alaska places (I think you need a ferry for one of the two)

second half of July through Sept: MT -> ID -> WA -> OR -> Norcal (this is riskiest part bc of fire season, but this timing is necessary to beat the snow in ID bc Magruder Corridor is a bitch)

oct-nov: central cal, NV, UT, CO, WY (assuming can drive in snow)

Dec: NM -> AZ -> Socal

I think it's worth trying for $3M. Thanks to Starlink, you won't get got like James Kim did a few years back.

180 planning here

Who is James Kim?

How are you accounting for sleeping in a national forest each night? Going for PR to AK wouldn't work, unless you like, e.g., break it up with smaller flights thru Charlotteand Seattle, heading into the nearest NF each night.
